On November 11, 2016, the 1st Annual K of C Trivia Challenge was held in aid of Marillac Place of Kitchener. On Friday December 23rd GK Dave Obermeyer and Brother Mac Graham, Event Coordinator presented funds raised to aid in their mandate of providing housing and support services for pregnant and parenting women and their children. On hand to receive a cheque for $12,500 dollars were Marillac Place Assistant Chair Sharon Penlington and Chair Walt Sowinski. Opened in 1987, Marillac Place provided a shelter for abused women. In 1992, they changed their mandate to meet the evolving needs of the community, providing housing and support services for pregnant and parenting women and their children. Marillac Place resolves to give mothers the tools to become effective parents and self-supporting, responsible members of the community. This community shelter provides safe, affordable accommodation, with basic life skill training, childcare guidance and educational opportunities. Marillac Place is open to independent women between the ages of sixteen and twenty-five who are pregnant or who have their child in their care, or who are attempting to regain care of their child. Marillac Place is a Special Works Conference of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul (Kitchener Particular Council). Their namesake, Louise de Marillac, was a follower of St. Vincent de Paul, who served the sick and the poor in the sixteenth century.
The successful 1st Annual K of C Trivia Challenge, presented by Council 1504, raised $12,500 for Marillac Place of Kitchener. The funds raised will go to support their mandate of providing housing and support services for pregnant and parenting women and their children.
